Case Study
Anti-Hail Net Device
Senior R&D Engineer ยท Sickle Innovations Pvt Ltd, India
ProblemApple orchards across Kashmir's hilly, terraced regions suffer regular hail damage, but conventional anti-hail netting is designed for flat, evenly spaced orchard rows and is difficult and costly to install on steep, irregular slopes.
Approach
- Developed a modular, terrain-adaptive support framework that anchors independently on uneven, sloped ground instead of relying on long straight support runs
- Designed an adjustable tensioning system to maintain consistent net coverage and wind/snow load tolerance across varying terrace heights
- Engineered the structure for rapid, low-labour deployment and retraction to suit smallholder orchard operations in remote hill terrain
ResultExtends hail protection to apple orchards on terrain where conventional netting systems are impractical, giving hillside smallholder growers the same crop protection as flat-land orchards.
