Problem

Growers had no reliable, timely way to track aphid infestation levels across a field. Manual scouting was slow, infrequent, and left fertiliser and pesticide timing decisions based on guesswork.

Approach
  • Led a cross-disciplinary team of three engineers across electronics, embedded systems, and AI to take the device from concept to field-deployable hardware
  • Designed a solar-powered, remotely deployed enclosure with sticky-trap rollers and a self-aligning wind-orientation mechanism for consistent daily sampling
  • Integrated an on-device edge AI vision pipeline to detect and count aphids locally, networking daily counts to a farmer-facing smartphone dashboard for fertiliser and pest-management timing
Result

Growers now get automated, daily aphid counts pushed directly to their phone, replacing manual field scouting with continuous, data-driven monitoring.
